In Fall of 2023, I visited preschools in the Pacific Northwest for lively workshops to help teachers & parents implement ideas in Parenting Beyond Power.

It had such a profound impact on both the individual and community level that I'm hitting the road again in 2024.

"I have three children in co-op preschools so I've done a lot of parent training. This was by far and away the best!"

What is a Parenting Beyond Power Interactive Workshop?
A Parenting Beyond Power workshop with me is an interactive story sharing experience that helps to connect the dots between our own experiences and how our culture impacts our relationship with ourselves, each other, & our children. These shared moments help us - as teachers, parents, classrooms, and a community -  to better understand our true needs and those of others (including the realization that we have needs!).

We provide space and a safe-enough-to-be-brave container to get at the root of familiar scenarios - acting out in school, bedtime & morning routine struggles, and emotional dysregulation that seems to come out of nowhere.

From collaboration and competency in the classroom, to ease and connection at home, to joy and autonomy for our kids - as educators, parents, children & partners - with the right tools & strategies, we can all get our needs met while being true to ourselves. This is Parenting Beyond Power in the classroom.

"Jen has an incredible ability to break BIG ideas down into small, step-by-step, practical strategies while simultaneously providing opportunity for reflection and learning.

I left the workshop feeling strengthened in my ability to approach difficult situations, having a better understanding of the interplay between children's needs and my own, with a deeper awareness of the connections between White Supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism in my relationships and teaching practice."

INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP 101
A standard workshop is two hours long; the first hour spent in an immersive story sharing experience that looks into how culture has helped shape our world, including exploration into influences of White supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism. After a short break, we use the second hour to identify and work through real-world problem solving tools & strategies discussed in Parenting Beyond Power.

The most common participant comment after a two-hour workshop is: "We needed more time!"  Additional time can be added in one-hour increments, up to two half-day sessions (with an evening between to process the first day's learning).

Sessions for teachers focus on classroom specific situations, while sessions for parents look at struggles at home

Workshops are interactive & collaborative in nature (not lecture / one-way communication), so participants will get as much out of it as they are willing to engage

Reading Parenting Beyond Power is not a pre-requisite to a productive workshop experience. All that is needed is curiosity, an open mind and willingness to hold space for ourselves and others

TEACHER & PARENT BENEFITS
• A better understanding of how culture informs our interactions with children - and how concepts of White supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism play out in ways we might not have considered before

• Clarity on the difference between intrinsic human needs and the strategies we use to meet those needs.  With the Problem Solving Approach, we can usually identify practical strategies that meet the needs of both teachers and children in the classroom, and parents & children at home - today!

• Better alignment of our teaching and parenting approach with the school/family's values

• A fresh sense of empathy & appreciation for your self, your children / students, partners, and colleagues - and concrete tools to meet both of your needs, even in the most challenging situations

"Our preschool was honored to have Jen Lumanlan at our Parent Education night. Jen is a master teacher: approachable, knowledgeable, accepting, and FUN!

Her message is clear and her parenting framework is a tool that can be used with children, and also with adults and parents at our school. We are excited to put it to use in our community. Thanks Jen!"

Parenting Beyond Power in the Classroom... and Beyond!
"Treehouse Learning hosted a series of workshops for both teachers and parents with Jen Lumanlan on her Parenting Beyond Power book and framework so now we have a shared language to address problems together.

Within our first few weeks of school after the workshops, we applied this content across multiple dimensions of interpersonal relationships, and not just in the classrooms and via the parent/child or teacher/child relationships! A teacher left the program early in the school year, and we used what we'd learned in Jen's workshops to navigate an otherwise emotional and challenging situation by recognizing, communicating about and addressing everyone's needs through this abrupt transition - children, parents, teachers, and admin staff.

Parents shared with us that these same tools also helped them to improve communication in their families - both with their children and far beyond this as well! They can now understand interpersonal challenges in an entirely different way, and can navigate formerly intractable conflicts with spouses and their own parents with grace and compassion, as they work to meet everyone's needs."
